I have been on amoxicillin for the past five days, and had unprotected sex, so the effectiveness of my birth control pills has been lowered. Will taking plan B help? Do I even need to take it?
Lizzie - you are right about antibiotics affecting your birth control pills. But, plan B is not for back up protection. It should only be taken in case of emergency, within 48 hours after unprotected sex. I strongly suggest you use condoms with a spermicide while on antibiotics and for at least a week after finishing them. Based on when you posted, it is too late for plan B to be of any help. Please protect yourself. One can never be too careful. You are in charge of your own body, and you knew antibiotics would affect your birth control. I don't understand why a back up method was not used, with the knowledge you have. I wish you the best of luck. Please give this some serious thought.
If birth control pills are affected by antibiotics, what makes you think Plan b would be any different. It has some of the same hormone that is in birth control pills. When you take antibiotics, you must use a BARRIER back up protection, like condoms and spermicide, the entire time you are on antibiotics and for seven consecutive days after you finish them or abstain from sex if you do not want to get pregnant. Plan b is not a good back up choice in this case.
