Does anyone know anything about the piriformis muscle? I am trying to get information about treatment (not physical therapy, that is not an option at present) and cannot get a professional response. I have been advised to have a spinal cord stimulator which I am checking into since I have no other choice for pain relief. Seems the medical community is divided on this issue. I was told by one doctor, if they can't see it or touch it, it doesn't exist and I am starting to believe this. I know this muscle exists because I am being treated for pain issues related to this area but need more information about treatment. Physical therapy is not working for me, I have been 12 times but always wind up in more pain. Now I am told a spinal cord stimulator will help but I am not sure it is recommended for this area. Any thoughts?
Definition: muscle extending from pelvis into gluteal region; origin, margins of pelvic sacral foramina and greater sciatic notch of ilium; insertion, upper border of greater trochanter; action, rotates thigh laterally; nerve supply, nerve to piriformis (sciatic plexus).
Are your doctors sure that it is the pitiformus muscle & not the sciatic nerve that runs through it? When that nerve is irritated a lot of people(doctors) think it's the pitiformus, & sometimes it can be. Strenthening exercises of this muscle can prove or disprove this. If you have had back problem in the lower back a lot of times the nerve endings are involved & you end up with sciatica. since this nerve runs through the pitiformus muscle, it can appear that it could be the muscle instead of the neve. Sometimes injections into this area can help too. Have they discussed this with you at all? Spinal cord stimulators help a lot of people, but I have one, & personally it doesn't help me at all. It just changes one feeling(pain) for another tingling or stinging type of feeling. All you can do is try, but also ask about get a trigger point injection into the hip area. It takes several too. Just my thoughts. ...
