Can a person diagnosed with bi-polar take ativan safely if no other medication is taken with it?

Thank you. I would like some more opinions as I have a relative using this med, with bi-polar and he is experiencing all the severe side efffects. He is now trying to get off the Ativan and it's not pretty. I think he is moving too fast. Thanks again...

Ativan has helped immensely with my bipolar disorder. Sleep is a huge issue with me. All my bipolar episodes have been brought on by lack of sleep. Ativan, just 1mg, calms my mind enough so that I can sleep. When I sleep, I can manage my bipolar symptoms. Therefore, I take Ativan because it helps me manage my bipolar disorder.
