My husband's doctor prescribed methotrexate for his RA. However, when he switched doctors a year later because he was getting no better, his new doctor told him with COPD he should have never been prescribed methotrexate.
Hello mailmom3. I came up empty. Nothing that I read said that the Methotrexate could not be taken. I am not a doctor however, so take the above from a laymans point of view. There are several nurses who volunteer thier time on the site, perhaps they could give you thier thoughts to your question. Best of wishes, pledge
Hello mailmom - I can see why another doctor would say that your husband should never have been on this medication. Methotrexate can cause lung damage and liver damage (among other things) and your husband is already dealing with COPD. I was on methotrexate myself and stopped taking it because I didn't think it was doing me any good either. I have Behcets and my doctor had me on this as well as Remicade infusions. Both were stopped. I don't know how long your husband was on this medication but I myself have suffered no long-term side-effects from it. I was on it for 7 years. Methotrexate when used for RA is supposed to slow down the joint damage and lessen the bone pain. You didn't mention other medications your husband is on or what kind of doctor prescribed this medication to him. A rheumatologist prescribed it to me along with the "infusion" therapy I was receiving.
He left his practice and I got picked up by another rheumatologist who continued those treatments. The drive was killing me though because the treatments were done in hospital and that was over an hour away for me. I was dragged out and tired when done. When I switched to a rheumatologist closer to home that is when the fun started. He suggested that I should not be on Remacade but would continue the methotrexate. I started feeling unwell from not being on the infusions and couldn't see the point of staying on the methotrexate... so I stopped everything and stopped going to the last doctor, too.
