my teen-aged daughter was recently diagnosed with mild bipolar disorder, and has been prescribed escitalopram. I read that one should tell their doctor if they have bipolar disorder before taking the medicine. What are the risks!
Hi, slagrange! The use of antidepressants in bipolar disorder is highly controversial as they have the potential to provoke hypo/hypermanic episodes even when these have not previously diagnosed. Still, the practice is fairly common and under strict medical supervision is usually fairly safe. Just watch for signs of mania ~ hyperexcitablity, restlessness, irritability, euphoria insomnia, etc.
Best wishes, Wildcat
