A variety of treatments for head lice are available including permethrin and pyrethrin, and prescription medicines, including malathion, lindane, benzyl alcohol, and spinosad. Resistance to permethrin is emerging in the world. I'd recommend speaking to your family doctor or dermatologist for guidance on the most appropriate treatments in your area of the world. If permethrin is selected, repeat application on day 10 may be advised. Strict avoidance of silicon based shampoos is needed as this can impair the effectiveness of permethrin. Resistance is an issues fro why permthrins don't always work as mentioned. However, failure of existing treatments can also be caused by reinfestation and non compliance with all instructions. Nit combing, performed in the proper manner is important while using permethrins.
