As a person with HCV and a former major alcoholic, years ago I started to develop this strange neuropathy. My feet and calves had no sensation but were simultaneously really painful. I went to my doctor and had a blood exam; the doctor waved the paper at me and said "this reading is impossible so it's a mistake". A year later I found a new doctor who did the same blood exam and said "your Folate level is one twentieth of the normal minimum" Take a supplement (he wrote down what to get: 5mg folate tablets). My neuropathy and all symptoms were gone within 48 hours.
I don't know why but doctors don't seem to test folate levels in men or alcoholics (not many people tell their doctors the absolute truth is part of it). It's kind of like people like the attention they get from from such a nasty pathology knowing that if they tell their friends it's just alcoholism and bad diet they'll have no-one to fuss around them.
