I have been using Effexor for several years and am no longer experiencing positive results. I am interested in understanding the many options. I would appreciate hearing people's experiences.
Unlikely that you really want to hear all peoples experience with this medication but you asked: This comes from a time (1993-4) before the manufacturers admitted to knowing of paradoxical reactions to SSRI's, albeit in very small numbers..
I was a little anxious to start with but also hopeful it would drag me out of an extended period of serious depression. Initially my mood did improve somewhat over 2 weeks (quickly); then there was a one day hiccup where I felt depressed and confused; suddenly I was hypomanic, I worked like I was possessed. I had two lives; the awake life and the asleep life; each was equally real. The asleep life took about five hours which felt exactly like 5 hours of real time (with incredibly lucid interactive dreams pertaining to to day to day situations). I generated memories from the asleep life that were virtually flawless and while seeming peculiar also seemed oddly plausible. I still can't remember 20 years later which were real conversations and which were dreams. (a bit of hand relief; at least 8 times a day was required too). That lasted 6-8 weeks and then I was dumped into a world of anxiety attacks where suicide seemed a really good sensible idea (no sadness involved just a strange compulsion to just walk in front of a bus or similar). I kept on having weird compulsions to walk into traffic; drive into a lamp poles etc. for some time... Finally, that stopped; it left me in a severely anxious state. I discontinued when the Doctor directed me to double the dose.
My future responses to other SSRI's and SNRI's completely fried me; I was totally insane by the end of this stage of medical treatment. Life has never been the same again.
Fortunately this only happens to around 1 in every ten thousand people and so while I got called a liar and drug addict for it then; today it is well recognised.
Well I could not tolerate Prozac at all. People do respond differently to medication. What suite one may not suit another. Unfortunately the side effects I got on 10mg Prozac were unbearable. I found Effexor suited me very well for a number of years. Have you spoken to your doctor about this?
