I have been taking paxil for 7 weeks now and it has done pretty much nothing but made my anxiety worse and make me feel tired. I started off at 10mg for 2 weeks and then 2 weeks later I switched to 20mg and now I am up to 40mg. I don't have any horrible side effects but it really has not done a thing for me (I have been on 40mg for about 2 weeks now). Do you think I should switch to something else and from your experience, what do you recommend? I am diagnosed with GAD and Panic Disorder. I have a friend that takes Prozac and says it has done wonders for him. I have a "Medication check" appointment with my primary tomorrow morning.
Hi, My! You've given Paxil a pretty "fair trial" which is generally considered to be 6-8 weeks at the recommended doses and some improvement in the early weeks is usually indicative of the medication beginning to work. Since every patient reacts differently to every medication it might be time to consider trying a different med. Lexapro, Prozac, and Zoloft have the best ratings for anxiety disorders amongst the SSRI's and the SNRI's Cymbalta and Effexor are close behind.
I had my best results with Effexor but I was also being treated for depression, and as I said every med will work differently for every individual.
That makes it a game of trial and error... but persevere and think positively. Your answer is out there!
Best regards and good luck! Wildcat
Paxil may not be the medication for you. It took me LOTS of trials to find the right one for me that has kept me healthy for the last 5 years. I have also been through 9 antidepressants to get to the right one but when you find it you will know. On most you will start it and it will begin working about 4 weeks in - 4 weeks in is the time frame it takes your body to get use to taking it and know you are taking it to begin working for you - then it will begin to work for you in some way. If you go another month or so and don't notice any change then talk to your doctor about trying another antidepressant there are many out there to try.
