8 Years ago I had my entire Colon removed. Since then Paregoric is the only medication that can both instantly relieve bowel pain and activity and also be used to ensure my ability to function wen no bathrooms are available. I am now being told by my area pharmacies that it has been discontinued. Any advice or options of where to find it would be greatly appreciated.
Good morning MWH95.
I did as much research as I could find on the internet. I have come up empty handed. Is there any way you could talk with a pharmacist who specializes in creating the different meds? A true Chemist? This medication is directly from the opium poppy and very difficult to find. There must be some other avenue you could try to find something comparable. It seems to be the equivalent of heroin in its' purist form and potency. I may have misread this, but it seems to be a drug very few would be prescribed. Perhaps they could try a morphine/anti-diarrheal liquid solution? The only other medications that came up under the search were strictly for diarrhea, not for pain too. I'm sorry I couldn't find out any information. Maybe you could call the FDA directly and see what (if any) alternatives might be available. I wish you the very best on finding a solution. If I come across anything else, I will repost to you in a comment.
After seeing me local Rite Aid pharmacy seeing me struggle and having to transfer over and over, he actually pursued this and obtained it for me. Also, Medco by mail, if your insurance will allow it will be available in a couple more weeks. I have gotten it also through Walgreens. I COMPLETELY understand. Hope this helps, and Wish you all the Best!
Paregoric is available from Hi-Tech Pharmacal and has been in the supply chain since August 2012. Independent pharmacies and chain pharmacies should be able to order through their local wholesaler. Pharmacists can also speak with your doctor about the availability of Paregoric.
