(i had arthroplasty last December) I have done strengthing exercises(putty, hand weights, even hand squeezers) nothing has helped. My hand is actually getting weaker and i am dropping things more than ever.I am scheduled to see my PCD next month to discuss a new plan of action.( I also have nerve damage) Any more insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Have you been able to do the exercises a number of times per day as they showed you? Every day? If so, then does it cause more pain when you do the exercises?
Do you wear a wrist brace when you sleep? Are you taking ibuprofen, Aleve or some other anti inflammatory?
I agree that a second opinion may be needed. It does not mean the first was wrong as much as you need a new approach to this. Something was tried and it didn't work. Be sure you take a list of your questions with you along with all your symptoms. That way you and the Doctor stay on track with what concerns you. You can also take notes if there are a lot of things discussed. I also suggest you bring someone with you who understands what you are dealing with and can listen and take their notes too. Often doctors talk too fast but when another is in the room besides the patient they tend to slow down.
Let us know how this goes, and any other information you give may be of help here too. Thanks, hope they can find a solution for you soon.
Have you had any new x-rays on your hand? I had my thumb & wrist rebuilt for arthritis in April of 2011, & it never got better, & within 6 months by x-ray the arthritis was already back. I too have this weakness, & very little use of my left hand. Unfortuneately for me it has also gotten into the right hand too. I need surgery on it too, but am afraid it will also be a failure. I did not have the joints replaced, but rather rebuilt using my own ligaments that were mashed up ,& placed around the joints that were already bad after grinding them out. This is a progresive disease, & surgery doesn't always work on some. I do hope you get better & wish you the best...
For me I cant move my right hand it gets red inflamed and so the story goes if you are familar with this I have FIBROMYALGIA.So most feel this is a B.S diagnosis like I do I to am going back to doctor I take suboxone for pain.Arthitius could be what you are experiencing but I think there is something wrong you shouldnt or I shouldnt be loosing any control in or on right side.My hand hurts so much gets cold and I say to myself maybe I am stroking if you have nerve damage odds are that it is probably that but if you are having pain I am not sure if you are on med but maybe it is time to start med or new doctor.Trust me I hear you on every level
I have De Quervain's Syndrome, which cause terrible pain in my wrist and thumb area. When it is inflamed, and the pain is awful, I drop things also. In other words, this may not be caused by nerve damage, but the pain that you have. I agree with Eliza Jane, that you need an EMG or nerve conduction study to verify that you have nerve damage. It just might be the pain. Also a second opinion NEVER hurts!! Best wishes!
