I am desperate for pain relief. I am tired of waking up to pain, tired of the drugs, surgeons don't seems to be much help. It could be compressed nerves according to my pain management doctors guess, could be the result of scar tissue in other areas, or it could be progression of my djd/ddd disease. All these are guesses from many doctors but no one wants to take on my case. One doctor even told me that I would have to live with this pain, and I flatly told him that he was asking me to commit suicide! I am headed for advise about the pain pump as I see no other choice. Any advise?
Mad Man. I hear your frustration. I had a failed back surgery in 1973 & have had horrendous pain every day since. Each time I think it can't get any worse, I have a worse day. I did have some relief from a second surgery in 1980 to clean up & out the mess the first surgeon had done to me. Was told I may have to have it repeated every 10 years. Well, guess what? I'm right where you are being turned down over & over again. I have been to the Florida Spine Institute back in 1994, University of Little Rock, University of Iowa City, Same answer everywehere. I have seen untold numbers of neurosurgeons to receive the news that more surgery may or probably could result in making me worse not better. I have a tendency to build a lot of scar tissue, plus from an injection or something have an aracnoid cyst in the spinal canal from L3 to L5. Docs are too afraid of touching me period. So I have had to learn to deal with pain.
I take the pills perscribed, new pain doc wants me try try the spinal cord stimulator, but have been told by 3 neurosurgeons it won't help me at all. So then I just learn to deal with it. It's hard now, very hard. That's not my only pain issues either, but won't go into my bones etc... My hubby has had 10 back surgeries with 2 fusions, 2 neck surgeries with fusions. Guess where he is right now because I don't feel well today? Out mowing the damn grass! He's a walking bionic man that is being scheduled for left shoulder surgery& has already had the right done. He had his 4th stent in his heart last month & has a pace maker. He has a hernia the size of a football with his stomach inside of it that can't be repaired which has caused him to have 2 bowel obstructions. Everytime he eats, we have the worry of will this be the time he'll die from the next bowel obstruction? He is also bipolar depressed. I guess I give you all this info so that maybe you can see that there are others out here that are suffering just as much as you or maybe more than you. Of that I would not be a judge. We all tend to feel pain differently, & no one likes to suffer. Hopefully if you see a new neurosurgeon as you say he/she can be of some help to you.I personally don't think surgery will take away all your pain, & sometimes like I said you have to take the pills & then just learn to deal with it. Have you considered talking with a pain therapist? I am not sure about the pain pump. It has never been offered to me, but I wish you all the best, & hope it works for you if you get it. We do have a great support group here on DC, & you are more than welcome to voice your frustrations & opinions at any time. I hope you will keep us informed of your ongoing struggle. It does help to talk, & I personally have found when I am concentrating on someone else's problem, my own have a tendancy to fade somewhat in the background. So keep posting please...
