Very dfficult to say without being able to examine you. Could be any number of things. Did it last longer than your period? How long did it occur? Were you constipated? Many questions to ask to determine what it could be. If it occurs again might want to discuss with the doctor to rule out any problems.
Hi M, I must agree with LaurieShay, you need to see your Ob/Gyn.
If the pain had been between your periods, I would guess that it is (I shall now totally mangle the spelling of this word... ) middleschmertz, or pain during ovulation.
IF the pain continues with your next period, and it's excruciating, you may need to seek out your nearest ER.
Best wishes to you.
It could be many things depending on where on your side is the pain located. If it is flank pain, there is a possibility of kidney stone. If it is down low near your pelvis it could be ovarian in origin like an ovarian cyst or something of that nature. Since you describe it as all up your left side I'm wondering about a possible kidney stone. When I had a stone, it hurt from my back, just below my ribs all the way down and across to deep within my pelvis in the lower abdomen. It turned out to be several small stones. Kidney stone pain tends to be a "colicky" pain which will come and go. Another possibility is constipation. It is very common for women to become constipated right before her menses start. This can cause abdominal and side pain. If it occurs again, I would have the Dr examine you to see what is going on. There are just so many things that can cause abdominal and side pain like this.
It is hard to say without going to your GYN and getting an exam. It could be anything. speaking from personal expirence, I used to get pains like that and it was caused by Endometriosis. But only your GYN can diagnosis you for that. I suggest that if it happens again or if you are really worried about it and want to ease your mind... go to your GYN and tell him or her what happened and let them give you a complete GYN exam. Good Luck!!
