why did my pain meds stop working while I was on the Butran patch? my pain got worse why? was on the patch for two weeks at first I thought it was working. soon as I went back to work I had to start taking my pain meds due to pain it did not work it got worse why?
You may have already researched and found the answer to this. I'm going off memory, so I hope I make enough sense...
Butrans affects the same receptors as opiate medications, but Butrans has 1st preferance. That means that the medication in Butrans will "hog" the receptor and not allow it to recognize any other drug. You need to be sure your Butrans dosage is high enough to cover your pain, since nothing else will work. There is also Belbuca which is the same medication, but in a little strip you press to the inside of your cheek. I use that for breakthrough pain.
Another way to describe it: Imagine someone named Morphine walks into a bathroom to use the toilet. Someone named Butrans is already sitting on the toilet. Morphine and 20 of his friends could all walk into that bathroom, but nobody else can sit on the toilet so long as Butrans is sitting on the toilet. LOL
I hope this help. :)
