... 5 years- I finally demanded mom go see an ortho who sees no signs of it, just some plates and screws that needed to be taken out of her leg years ago because the same "GP" never did any follow-up since 2004--- my mom is crippled now and in nursing home and needs frequent blood transfusions now and I worry about VRE- Home administrators refuse to follow the ortho's med orders (1/6/10) to stop vanco now because they don't want to over-ride the quack GP. Dr. Quack will not return my calls what should I do?
Osteomyelitis - My mom's "GP" has been treating her "presumed" osteomeylitis with IV vancomycin for?

If your mother's GP is part of a nursing home you are really stuck. These doctors think they are GODS. They can not be fired or anything. Fly out and bring your mom under your wing where you live. She must understand that you love her and want to be with her. Spend sometime with her. She is not well at all.
You mentioned she needs frequent transfusions and the reason is something you need to look into. She should see a Hematologist (doctor of the blood). She can not live getting blood often. Her body is shutting down.
Talk to the home social worker. They are more open than anyone else in the home. If no one listens and you can not bring her closer to you, then move her to another home. But you must realize her body might not be able to take the move to where she knows no one.
Sorry I can not help you anymore than making you think about your options. I am a realist, my dad died and my father died because a GP that did not know his head was on backwards.
BTW: The Ortho. is right !!!
I will keep you and your mom in my prayers.

Thank you so much, of course she is in a nursing home and on Medicaid. Monday I bring out the big guns and get the state and feds involved- CDC, elder abuse and Medicaid fraud. I would have been there over the holidays but the Ortho visit couldn't be scheduled any sooner the 6th of Jan. and truely hoped she would just be admitted to the hospital that day where they have REAL doctors. Now have to wait for spring break in March (teacher schedule)- ps why can't nursing home docs be fired?
They are contracted by the nursing home. That is why they can not be fired. Each nursing home has a staff physician. Usually they are IT !! This way the home can get a hold of the doc they know, in case there is a real problem. You and I know nurses think they can handle any problem. It is a big scam. See what you can find in a very small care private home. Some do take Medicaid.Usually they have 5 or 6 people in the house and 2 attendants at all times. One is an R.N. Now this is a really great thing.
Is your mom on Medicare too?
Why may I ask is your mother on regular transfusions? Is it mylodysplasia or cancer?
I do wish you the best
Dr. Quack is NOT the staff physician she is just one who has "privedges" there and nobody wants to offend her and sadly my mom thinks this wacko is her friend. I sent my concerns about VRE to the home months ago- Monday if they are not taking samples to culture that very morning by the staff physcian that my mom has never met my letters of concern go to home corporate authorities and if they don't initiate immediette action then I go to health department and local media. Dr. Quack wants her to get to the hospital for her plate removal surgery first so she can try to blame the hospital or surgery on a positive VRE status if that is actually the case. I know the home health agency seeing her before my mom was admitted to the nursing home did a culture and she was NOT VRE then it was specifiically excluded- I have that paperwork- the hospital she is going to on 1/25/10 will know these facts as well on Monday. The I go to medicaid for them to pull ALL of Dr.

quacks records for payments on my mom and the nonexistant justification why she needed al these years of IV vanco when what she really needed was to go back to the ortho to check up on the broken leg that healed fine and then became painful. Dr. Quack says she needs blood transfusions because osteoporis kills the bone marrow- all my friends and me with the same condition beg to differ. She has terrible osteoporosis since she is cripped and can't walk so of course her bones can't support all that unecessary hardware and she gets pain and swelling and nobody has proved there was infection Dr. Quack just assumed and gave her years of a very toxic drug- My mom is also on medicare as well because of her age- Dr. Quack is going down and it won't be pretty. I am a professional DT ( developmetal therapist special ed)and bill medicaid daily for my students and know what is all involved in a medicaid investigation- too bad it will take a long time. One of my students went through this when her flaky mom was trying to play the system ( my school paperwork was perfect, no consequences for me) but it took months.
One thing you need to know is that Medicare is #1 when it comes to fraud... They will pass it on to Medicaid. Medicare does all the research. The osteoperosis does not cause you to loose blood and need transfusions. That is a bunch of huuey. Now if she had bone cancer then osteoperosis will get worse. I would love to see the diagnosis that is being billed to cover the blood transfusions. Yes, she may need the transfusions, but, there has to be a primary dx code for this condition.
You have your hands full. I will pray this is not too late to correct the damage they have done.
Thank you so muchthe ortho doc told me directly that my mom is strong and healthy ( she looks better than my 52 year old sister) and she should come through this fine once she gets the useless metal out of her system and yes she does need a knee replacement now but that will come later. My family tree has lots of tough old birds that just keep on ticking and live to near and even over 100. The nursing home wouldn't give me any medical info at all until I sent a GA advocate in for me. It was Oct. when I learned her antibiotic was vanco and have been involved in this ever since.
