I was diagnosed with Osteo Arthritis this year, however, my neck, arms and around back is always in extreme pain and i cannot function at all when there is a flare up.
Some proven effective methods to help with osteoarthritis include regular gentle weight training plus aerobic exercise- but start out taking it easy and be slow to increase difficulty. Water exercise is a great option to add-on, or may be more the right level given your current flare. The water helps reduce strain on joints and provides support. The exercise is important to keep your body from deteriorating but you also want to maintain a healthy weight as being overweight puts greater strain on the joints.
For pain, hot or cold ointments or packs can be very helpful. One will likely be your preferred method. TENS personal use machines are also an at-home mom-prescription option. You may also want to try supplements. Some people say glucosamine, chondroitin, avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), Omega-3s and likely others such as natural cures for inflammation. Also, changing your diet to an anti-inflammatory one will likely help to some degree.
You could also try massage, acupuncture, dry needling or other manipulative pain therapy. Also, physical therapists who do manual neck realignment can be great but usually you have to go regularly.
