I started taking ortho-tri-cyclen this past month. Today I took my 16th pill BUT two days ago started my period. I was a Sunday start. I know that I should keep taking the pills like normal and my period will regulate. My question is after this period stops will I be protected?? When I get to my sugar pills are they going to protect me??
The manufacturer states you are protected from pregnancy after the first seven consecutive days on the pill. Most healthcare professionals that I have worked with in the past preferred that their patients use back up the whole first cycle (or the first pack of pills) then consider themselves protected from pregnancy on the second cycle (or pack of pills) Once you are protected, you are protected even during the time you are on the inactive "sugar" pills. Having breakthrough bleeding in the first few months on the pill is not unusual. You are correct, you should just keep taking the pills as they come in the pack and you will eventually regulate out once the pills hormones suppress your own. So, if you are 16 days in the manufacturer thinks you are safe. If you want to truly be sure and safe, continue to use back up condoms through your whole first pack then you can have unprotected sex IF you are absolutely sure your boyfriend is not having sex with other girls. Condoms are the only way to protect yourself from STDs and sexually transmitted infections. You cannot tell who is infected by looking, in most cases. Many times, men can be carrying and transmitting STDs and never have much in the way of symptoms in themselves. So it is up to you. If you two are monogamous and you know his past and his habits and you want to trust in him then you can have unprotected sex. The pill doesnt protect you against STDs, only pregnancy. Some STDs can be just as devastating to your life as becoming pregnant could. Word to the wise but you can do as you will.
