I am starting my green pills tomorrow and I'm currently in college, so I'll go home within my third month of being on Ortho Tri Cyclen and I am wondering will I be okay to have unprotected sex with my boyfriend, I'm just so afraid I'll get pregnant but if I know for sure I won't I'll be able to calm down. I take my pills at the same time everyday and I never miss one.
To be most effective, your pills should be taken every day at roughly the same time of day. If you are doing this then you have a 1% or less chance of pregnancy. The only other thing that can interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills is antibiotics. Antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of the Pill and you need to use back up protection, like a condom, (or abstain) the whole time you are on the antibiotics and for seven days after you finish the antibiotics. Once you are on a contraceptive like birth control pills, you are protected against pregnancy but the Pill doesnt protect you from STDs. The only reason to use condoms along with the Pill after your initial seven day waiting period is for STD protection unless you need back up for a missed pill or if you are on antibiotic therapy. If you know your partner is STD free then you can have sex without condoms without worry of pregnancy.
