My doctor tells me that if I can't control my ulcerative colitis symptoms successfully without the use of Prednisone, he wants me to consider having surgery. I feel this is not an option for me, much less a cure. How can I find a doctor here in Ontario willing to treat me long term with drugs rather than using the threat of having to wear an ostomy bag for the remainder of my life? And are there any new and natural treatment breakthroughs that could help me?
It's difficult to recommend anything without knowing your medical history, which only your doctor would know about. There are other medicines available to treat ulcerative colitis (don't know if you have used those). Please see link below.
It might be a good idea to see another doctor for a second opinion.
I don't know your age, marital status, etc. which sometimes makes a difference when thinking of body image issues. However UC that cannot be controlled, is often best remedied by surgery. Having your plumbing changed, while difficult, will give you your life back. The medical options all do very nasty things to your health and do not cure the underlying UC.
I'm currently taking prednisone but I was just put on after having a flare up and they put me on a new medication as well because the last medicine I was on didn't work which was Asacol I think. I would suggest asking about other advanced meds because I'm on a new one now and my doctor said that their is a bunch more meds out there that might work better. Good luck.
After NO LUCK for many years from asacol and prednisone my gastroenterologist mentioned surgery. Instead I finally consulted a certified homeopath who suggested slippery elm instead of asacol and tumerik instead of prednisone. NO SIDE effects and my symptoms are gone. I am now able to go the store or restaurant with family or a friend. Without an emergency accident. Good Luck !
