... & am off them. I ask the doctor to let me try the oxycodone again. Methadone caused a weight gain of 30+ LBS. in a year & I stayed exhausted all the time. The oxycodone 20 mg a day is not controlling my pain. I woke my mother up this morning crying in my sleep. (she is visiting from FL.) Other meds I take for the pain are parafonte forte 500 mg 2x a day(muscle relaxer), xanax 1mg @ night to rest & neurotin 200 mg a day & 300 mg at night for nerve pain & ultram 100 mg for breakthrough pain. I hate taking all these pills & still hurt. All the meds have caused chronic gastritis. I had not heard of this drug so I am looking for something to control pain without the fatigue & to get off some of the other meds. I do have sleep apnea but I use my machine. I would like some input from people who have went through the gambit of drugs for chronic pain. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. My neck & back pain is severe. I receive facet blocks in my neck & lower back & also epidurals in my lower back. I guess I am wishing for a wonder drug that controls pain without the fatigue & blah feeling.
Very sorry to hear about your pain. I know how bad it can get. I too have been through the entire gambit of medications, procedures, injections, including Radio Frequency Thermocoagulation. Then I was involved in a car accident and suffered burst fractures in my mid spine. My surgeon knew my insurance had relapsed and couldn't afford the fancier meds. Opana is very good but can be very expensive too. If money really isn't a factor, yes it's a good choice. MS Contin works very well too and is far less costly. It's better to have one or two meds that'll handle the pain but there's also the risk of addiction when prescribed opiates. But if it's a choice between opiates and surgery, stick with the opiates! Surgery should be the absolute last choice. Even after it's done, you'll still need the opiates and your back will never be the same. Studies have shown that people even 5 years post surgery still depend on pain medication. In my opinion, MS Contin is a good choice and is affordable. Always try and take the least amount possible yet still control pain. I hope you find a medication that works well for you.
Hey, I am on oxycodone now and was on methadone for 2 years after a life threatening car accident. All I can say is this, the oxycodone is not working for the pain. The methadone is a longer lasting pain medication that is much preferred by a lot of people whose doctors are scared or too weird to prescribe it. Basically your concern about weight loss is important, but I believe for me, it is the pain and pain related fatigue that causes me to burn less calories a day and gain 10 pounds when my doctor said for my back I absolutely must lose at least 50 pounds... arrrg. It is so hard to loose weight when you are in back pain, in addition you need to make sure you are controlling constipation, I know it is hard but I have to drink Miralax every single day, eat high fiber and always follow how many days between bowel movements, why because a slow metabolic system will cause weight gain, also my weight gain is mostly swelling due to swelling joints and inflammation. So I really like methadone but was on 30 mg to 40 mg a day. that is 10 mg once ever 6 hours, or two of them every 12 hours. I took two every 12 hours... so sick of taking pills now. Hey, ask for increased dose if you will before you go on the short acting oxicotin, oxycodone medicines, I don't want you to regret it. Make sure the weight is not water, constipation is under control and try your best to walk as far as you can without hurting yourself every day. We have to start getting our muscles in shape to support our spines, because if you are like me, I want out of pain so I can lead a decent life, go hiking, camping, drive my four wheel truck, play my guitar and other hobbies again. take the methadone wait one hour for maximum relief and plan your walk right then. You can't eat with the family because they eat too much... my husband cooks and I am doomed. I ask him to cook only afternoon, not dinner and have a nutritional protein drink with vitamins for dinner that is measured 300 calories. I don't have kids at home and do not have to cook for my husband who loves to cook (may be too much). I NEVER eat, fast food, fried foods, real fatty meats, and I use splenda for sugar. I realized when the medication is working my appetite is lower and that is okay I guess. The protein drink I require because of a damaged stomach lining... Well I wish I was in your shoes I would give up my oxycodone for methadone any day, after the car accident it helped me save my plant nursery business and that was hard work. Eventually economic conditions closed it but it was fun... just saying I did all that on methadone and could never do it on oxycodone!
I wish you all the relief you can get and we all are different, I know... just consider.
relief tonight and hugs... Amanda
