I can't even begin to appreciate the shattering effect this has had on your lives. I feel sure that I would be angry and bitter in the same situation; just plain frustration and bitterness. He is so lucky that you have stuck with him and remember the meanness is not really directed at you even if it seems that way.
Remember that every year medicine advances and nerve regeneration or repair may be well possible in the future. They only figured out to give heart attack patients anti clotting medication immediately about 30 years ago and that improved survival and lessened damage to the heart dramatically.
I'm hopeful about nerve repair as I have a sister with MS and I'd love to see her able to walk properly again. She gets no support from her lazy husband.
Bless you, Steve
