I am new to this. Was diagnosed with liver failure recently. I do fine most of the time. Have adjusted my diet and stopped abusing alcohol. The bloating and leg pain is so uncomfortable. When do I make a decision to go to the ER and when do I just deal with it? Is there anything they can do for me to keep my legs from feeling restless because I cant sleep at all as a result.
Have they prescibed anything for the edema (ankle fluid) or ascites (fluid in the peritoneal cavity)? You should be taking a diuretic like Frusemide (1or 2 x 40mg per day) and no later than 4 hours or so before bed. Your legs are painful as the fluid starts to drain when you lie down and your legs shrink but fill rapidly once you are vertical again. Get some elastic diabetic pressure socks (expensive ~ $25) and this will stop your legs and ankles swelling too much during the day. If the diuretics work on the ascites you will get rid of that fluid off your abdomen and you will be comfortable again. I lost ~35lbs in two weeks when I started diuretics (all retained fluid).
