I have been taking 900 mg daily of Neurontin in three doses for 16 months for pain after shingles. How do I best ween myself off of this medication?
Speak to your physician of course but I have stopped and started this medication on several occasions without any difficulties at all. I think that there maybe a seizure factor with stopping it immediately so I would think taking your dosage down to 2x a day for 1 week, then 1x per day for another week and then if you wanted you could cut the last pill in half. I don't believe they are time released. Or you could take it ever other day, then every third day, every fourth, that way until comfortable enough to stop all together.
Slowly (I did 100mg at a time. I'd do that for 3 days and then go down 100mg more. Towards the end even 25 mg a day sent me into a tailspin so at 600 mg a day I went cold turkey). I have had grave problems getting off this drug but my dose was higher and I was on it longer (2400 mg daily for 13 years). I'm in full out drug withdrawal. That having been said, my sister went off it from the same dose and stopped cold turkey, no problem. I knew right from the start that this drug did not sit well with me. My doctors encouraged me to stay on. Bad advise for me. I guess it depends on your reaction to it. Best wishes.
