panic attack and insominia, so dr put me on xanax 0.5 mg 2 times a day and take 2 at night for sleep, havent taken much during the day only if really needed, but afraid of taking it at night for fear of xanax being additictive..and after going thru detox dont want to be doing that again with xanax, but they say short term should be fine and i really NEED to SLEEP, anyone out there have some input on this... has anyone else gone thru this too? thank you
Xanax is quite addictive if taken for longer than a few weeks, but, if your doc takes you off of it very slowly, you should have no problems. Just make sure you communicate this to your doc, that you want a very slow withdrawal.
I've been on xanax on and off for years, like 15 years, with no problems, so try not to worry so much, if you can. I also did a cold turkey w/d off of opiates (prescribed) and it was hellish indeed, nothing can compare to that bit of hell. I know just how you felt, detoxing from dilaudid.
Just take the xanax detox very very slow and you'll be fine. You DO need to sleep, as you wrote, and Ambien is not the best choice when coming off of opiates.
Best wishes to you,
Correction, only the person can make a drug addictive. Xanax causes dependence as does dilaudid. You should not have had to go thru any kind of detox with dilaudid, it should have been tapered down, as xanax needs to be when you stop taking it. Addiction is a pathological condition where people take the drug to get high, not for the purpose for which its intended, and more then is prescribed, REGARDLESS OF THE CONSEQUENCES. If you would go out on the street and buy a med, knowing that you can be arrested and put in jail, or worse, then you're addicted. If your body misses it when its gone, then its dependence. Never suffer because you're afraid you'll get addicted, as long as you take it as prescribed and not to get high, you'll be fine.
I think you are scared you will not be able to sleep without taking xanax? You should not let the fear, because of your previous experience... stop you from getting a good nights rest. You were prescribed a low dosage. And you said yourself, you only take it as needed.Trust yourself and take the xanax without guilt. You are under a Physician's care, obviously. You take it during the day without reservation... so feel free to take it for sleep.I would rather take the xanax, than a sleeping pill,if given the choice.I am not a fan of sleeping pills.I do have a prescription, but rarely take it.I also have a prescription for Valium.I am suppose to take 3 a day.I have 2 bottles filled completely full.I am not addicted.Nor,do I take the Valium to "get high".I am not really sure how your question got so complicated with an answer about going out in the streets to buy drugs? But my advise,I stand behind.Which is...
take your xanax as needed. That includes when you go to bed.I agree with Lara, when you are ready and feel you are ready to exclude this medication... taper down on Physician's care..You will be fine.Just the fact you are showing your concern about taking the xanax is a good sign.I hope this helped. And Good Luck to you!!
I saw on Dr Oz that Xanax is only supposed to be prescribed for up to three months. It's ok to take it - just make sure you are weaned off it. With you just going through detox in Dec it's no wonder you're having trouble sleeping. It takes time for your brain/body to return to normal. Also try some more natural sleep aids - Melatonin, valerian root, wild lettuce leaf extract, etc. Best wishes - ElizaJane
