Hi Trvlgrl: Is there a particular reason you want to quit it? Are you going to take a different thyroid hormone instead? Are you having problems with side effects? The dose you are on now is about 3/4 Gr equivalence, I believe, which is a very low dose. Have you discussed this with your doctor yet,who prescribed it? Hormones can be tricky, and should be adjusted with the supervision of a doctor.

The main reason I want to stop taking it is because it's been a hassle with my insurance company- they want me to use their mail order pharmacy, optum RX and they always seem to be out of stock of my dosage. So will it cause any major side affects to just stop taking it since it's a low dosage?
Trvlgr; You may think it is a low dose but it is the dose that keeps your thyroid function working right. Talk to your doctor and maybe the doctor can call the insurance or the pharmacy and tell them that you are not to run out and why can't they keep it in stock. That is crazy and You should call your insurance company the phone is on the card and tell them what the problem is and you're going to call the insurance commissioner in your state that you are required to get it through your insurance and its set up with a mail order and they never have the medication. You could have many problems if you stop your thyroid such as breathing swolling swelling in throat and mouth etc don't do it.
Oh gosh, didn't realize all that could happen - and thanks for the info about my insurance, hopefully they'll work with me but I'm not holding my breath...
Hi again Trvlgrl: My insurance does not cover Nature-Throid. But cash price for me is only $21.00 for 3 months at Walmart. I think $7 per month is very cheap! Just call the pharmacy a couple of days before you need your prescription filled and they will order it for you. I have never had a problem getting it from Walmart on time. I shopped around for cash prices at various pharmacies, and Walmart was the cheapest.
I actually was just paying cash for it at first so that I didn't have to go through the hassle with my insurance company and was only paying like, $15 for a 2 or 3 month supply but then she upped my dosage to the 48.5 and then Walgreens wanted $22 for a 30 day supply versus paying $3.61 for a 3 month supply through the insurance doing the mail order pharmacy. So I'm sure Walmart will be the same amount with the dosage I'm on unfortunately...
It just doesn't seem right that they can get away with making me use their mail order pharmacy in order for them to pay, especially when they have issues keeping it or getting my dosage in stock.
That's odd, because my prescription for Nature-Throid costs the same whether I am taking 81.25mgs or 97.50mgs. The different doses do not affect the price. It's $7/month or $21 for 90 days at Walmart.
Hope you get it worked out. I took Synthroid years ago and it didn't work for me. This one works well
Tgirl' Was that a Walgreens and did you tell them you had Insurance or did they run it through the insurance on file. you may try another store, And when you turn in the prescription say what is the cheapest way to buy this my insurance is only for mail order. I have a gut feeling that they are putting it on your prescription which is higher copay because it is not thru the insurance plan But if the store says 4.00 for a month for the generic of anything that would be 12.00 for 3 months. if this is your regular pharmacy call them and talk with the Pharmacist how much if you buy it through their plan Chuck1957 please let us know what happens.
When I first went on naturethroid my insurance paid for two months through Walgreens but in order for them to pay I had to switch over to the mail order. That's when I asked the pharmacist how much if I just pay it. The first time they only charged me the $15 for 2 or 3 months but the when my doc changed my dosage he told me it would be $22 for 1 month supply- I did tell him that I only paid $15 for 2 or 3 (can't remember) and he said well, you were on a lower dose. Still didn't understand why that should make a difference but now the problem is my prescription is with the optum RX and so I'd have to go back to my doctor and try to get another prescription to try and find it cheaper on my own. I still think it's ridiculous that united healthcare can get away with this- like, they'll cover it if I go through the mail order, but it's never in stock... ugh
Thanks for all the help though, I do appreciate it and I'm going to call again tomorrow to see if it's in stock yet and then call united to see if they'll do anything- someone else suggested the insurance commissioner.
