Do any of you know of any OTC sleep aid, natural of course, that I can take to get better sleep? I have heard of Melatonin, Wal-mart, but know much about it from 1st hand experience. I would like to hear from people who use it, or have had used it. Pros and cons please.
I have had experience with the following herbs, which mainly help with anxiety, but secondarily also help to be able to relax sufficiently to go to sleep. All are herbs and can be purchased without preservatives or additives, if you are careful where you purchase them, mainly at health food stores or Whole Foods grocery stores: Holy basil, Relora, Rhodiola, Calcium & Magnesium in a 2:1 ratio, Kava kava (see various warnings and interactions), St. John's Wort (see various warnings and interactions) and L-tryptophan a natural ingredient found in turkey (see various warnings).
Hi i have had success with melatonin in the past. I had to use it at quite a high dose but for a naturally occurring product i would definitely rate it. I also tried valerian in the past but am unsure how much it helped? Have you tried phenergan? It isn't natural but is otc med. It is a medicine that is used for motion sickness but also causes somnia. It worked very well for me, but you should only use this short term.
Because i am on a cocktail of drugs anyway, my doctor has now put me on an anti-depressant to aid my sleep; amitriptyline. I know you didn't ask about prescription drugs, but if you were to try one i would recommend this one. You can use it quite safely long term also. I hope you get some sleep soon!
Hello sandy555! I have also tried several sleep aides such as Ambian, Lunesta, Clonazepam, you name it. I have also tried homeopathic supplements includind Melatonin. No luck. Finally I decided to try just regular over the counter drugs. I have finally been able to get some sleep using Benadryl or Unisom. I usually need to take a higher dose but my doctor assures me that it is safe. Well, I hope that you will be able to find something that works for you. Insomnia can really effect you overall health. Let everyone know how you are doing! Sweetie Pie
