I have read a lots of positive reviews about nardil, I am seeing several that speak of weight gain. I have to maintain a sculpted body by weight training when not feeling absolutely DOWN & OUT. Anyone with input about being able to weight train while taking Nardil. I understand that we all are unique in our med responses. I'm anxious to feel better while still able to be physically active. Male, 58 years old.
Hello again Lauretha, Nardil is a potential weight gainer. I have probably gained 10-15 lbs off and on. Yes, you can exercise as much as you want. After I gained the weight I started eating better and started walking everyday and lost the weight and have mostly kept it off except for short periods of time when I've gone back to eating unhealthily and stopped walking. (before the weight gain I led a very sedentary life) btw, I'm 50yrs old so were aroung the same ballpark age wise. As you mentioned we all react individually to meds, etc. I've known some individuals that have gained an extreme amount of weight being on many different psychotropic drugs besides Nardil. All of these individuals (that I know) are very sedentary and do not eat healthily.
Although I don't know about the effects of exercise on Nardil, I do know, from personal experience, that Nardil caused me to gain about 50 lbs. in about 5-6 months. I constantly CRAVED carbohydrates and sugar. It also gave me edema and constipation, and caused 'manic' type symptoms, and other symptoms such as inappropriate laughter. However, I was put on it in a horrible psych hospital where a crazy psych pushed my dose from 0 to 90 mg. in a 1 1/2 wk period, while at the same time, taking me off Xanax (6mg/day), in 1 1/2 weeks. That was the most traumatic experience in my life - happened years ago in my 30's. However, it was very effective in treating panic/agoraphobia/depression in about 3 months. I finally insisted on going off it and was put on Parnate, which was MUCH BETTER - no weight gain or any of the other symptoms. But of course, these meds work differently for everyone, so others might not experience these sxs. You might switch to Parnate if you continue to gain wt on Nardil despite exercise
