Please let me know if anyone on this site has has success with Nardil in treating Depression after trying the tricyclics, ssri and pretty much all the old and new antidepressants over the last 30-40 years. My provider has mentioned Nardil after my 2 month run on desiprimine with little relief.

Hi lauretha, YES! I have been on Nardil for 26yrs, it's been a lifesaver for me. My Psychiatrist tried me on ALL of the antidepressants that were available at the time. The old and new ones. Nardil was literally the last ditch effort and within 3-4 weeks the relief was profound. The depression and extreme social anxiety I suffered from went away. And because of the potential of serious side effects, when newer drugs came out she would have me slowly go off the Nardil and try the newer drugs to no avail. 6 years ago I moved and had to get a new Psychiatrist. He was surprised that I was taking Nardil because it is a drug that is rarely prescribed. He took me off of it and tried every antidepressant, mood stabilizer and antipsychotics that were out. My "treatment resistant" depression/social anxiety came back in full force.
I continued to plead with him to put me back on the Nardil, but he wanted to exhaust every other option first. Finally he put me back on Nardil and once again within 3-weeks it was working as well as it had always worked in the past. He told me that my Psychiatrist was right! I like this psychiatrist a lot and continue to see him.
There are many foods and medications that are contraindicated when one is taking Nardil. What can happen is your blood pressure can spike so high that you could have a hypertensive crisis that could potentially bring on a stroke. This is rare, but you MUST follow the warnings strictly. In the 26yrs I've been on the drug I've had one MINOR reaction due to not following the restrictions AT ALL. I foolishly did some Meth, which I'd done a few times before with no problems. I could feel my BP rising, felt a bit of a headache. I called my shrink, she had me take my BP which was high (not dangerously) then she instructed me to take it again in 10 minutes and call her back which I did. She told me I'd be fine and the symptoms went away within 20minutes.Since then I have adhered strictly to the warnings. To me though, I easily will forgo the foods and Meds contraindicated because the Nardil is so effective in treating my Depression/Social Anxiety.
For indivduals that are on Nardil this drug works tends to work very well The only other thing I'd suggest is if the doctor who has talked to you about Nardil is a general Practitioner, I would see a Psychiatrist to make the determination to try you on Nardil. Psychiatrists obviously know so much more about your condition and psychotropic medications. I wish you much success in combating the depression whether you try Nardil or not. Would really like to hear back from you if you do try Nardil! Good Luck! Julie
I too tried about every SSRI for depression, panic attacks with agoraphobia and later, PTSD, with little success. Nardil worked! I agree with other community member responses that stress the importance of the many contraindications. On Nardil, you do have to follow the diet and watch over the counter medications carefully. You need to wear a medical id too and eating out is a trick. I think it's a fine trade for relief of depression and other disorders that respond well to Nardil when other medications fail. I have never had a hypertensive crisis due to food and i make sure my doctors know what i am on and dentists too. i too have had doctors who wanted to change me to a different drug. Nightmare! It does take awhile to work and patience is a true virtue; you just have to wait it out. This forum is a great place to get support during that waiting. As for me, Nardil really gave me my quality of life back. I hope you have a positive outcome if you and your psychiatrist decide on this treatment! Here to help you with any questions you may have. Take care!
