... weekly. He stopped taking the humira because it caused blood in his urine. Doe's anyone know the long term effects of using Humira? He hasn't been under a Doc's care in over a year and isn't using any medication for his disease. I fear that his spine has fused together. Also, I've been hearing about stomach or bowel complications linked to A.S. Anyone have information regarding this?
God bless you, I know how hard it is when your child is sick. He absolutely needs to get to a rheumatologist. If he has untreated Ankylosing Spondylitis, not only will it damage his spine, it can cause congestive heart failure, pulmonary fibrosis, and kidney failure. It also causes stomach and bowel problems. People with AS can develop ulcerative colitis or chron's. Please encourage him to go back to the doctor. There is no cure for our disease, my back is fused as well, and I understand how depressing this disease is, but your son needs help. There are several other medicines he can take if Humira isn't working for him. His life will be greatly shortened if he does not get help. Praying for you!
I began taking Humira for Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2001. At that time the drug was only available through a blind study program at my arthritis clinic. With the combination of the Humira and methotrexate, After a few months I knew I was not receiving a placebo because my extremely painful symptoms began to disappear. After the veil on the study was lifted and it was revealed that I was getting Humira, I remained in the study program for 10 more years being closely monitored by my Rheumatology Staff . My RA has been in remission every since then. I have had no serious side effects or problems related to the drug but I also know that I still have the disease therefore I take certain precautions and I know my limits.
