Is 2000 mg. at bedtime extreme? I want to make sure we are not overdosing him.
I do not agree and I think if someone doesn't really know a good answer should not comment I am not trying to be rude but I have been on depakote before and have taken 3,000mg at age 17 and do not think that is extreme at all if the doc thought so he would have not put him on that strong of a dose. Also he is 21 and not 8yrs. old big difference he is older and can tolerate stronger doses the age makes a difference as well our bodies can handle more as we get older.
The dosage for bipolar/mania is often much greater than the dosage for seizure control. 2000mg is not an unusual dosage for a person who is taking it for psychiatric reasons. The therapeutic range is considered 50 to 100 mcg/mL in blood plasma. I have found that splitting the dose through the day works better than taking it all at once, to avoid the hungover feeling that sometimes accompanies taking a large dose at night.
