so far thats the worst of it. being only 20 months he can't really tell me though. please any parents with experience with this med let me know of any side effects you noticed.
My son is 5 years old. For the past year he has been diagnosed with ADHD. About a month ago he started going through a medical crisis. The medication was causing uncontrolled bladder spasms which at the time his staring spells got worse. So we stopped that medication and had a neurology consult. He was diagnose with childhood absent seizures. Doctor told us the ADD and childhood absent seizures are strongly connected. He was started on Zarontin and the seizures got better but his behaviors at school were horrible to the point I was leaving work almost every day. I couldn't figure out what happened, one day I was retracing our morning steps after getting called to the school at 8:30am before his day even started. Zarontin liquid is red! I called the pharmacy to ask if there was dye in the liquid (I'm sure of it). And Yes, both red and yellow. Knowing red dye is a trigger for ADHD behaviors I asked the pharmacy if there were any other generic form.
All forms of this medication including the capsules have red dye in them. Why on earth they would put dye in a drug for a condition that is linked to ADHD for which red dye is a trigger?? The Neurologist tried adding another medication that works for seizures and mood control and wanted to lower the Zarontin dose but still have him on it. I told him absolutely not, find one med without dyes for him to be on. Why prescribe another med just to help because you put red dye in the other. It serves no purpose besides making it colorful.
