Our pediatrician just recommended we start our 6 yr old on Focalin. He has been having trouble with impulse control, and has even started to hurt his brother. My husband and I are VERY hesitant about medication, and we do not no anyone who is/has used Focalin. Any and all advice/comments/info would be great (bad or good). Thank you.

Focalin is a great option in my own opinion for a 6 year old who is suffering with the latter problems you mentioned. It's a mild stimulant (related to Ritalin) and has few side effects for a stimulant. I myself suffered from similar problems. I was prescribed Adderall which is a every potent Stimulant which worked great for me. I started to get good grades, my behavior changed. I would suggest Adderall if Focalin doesn't work. I hope it works out for him. Good luck.
My son is also 6 and just started taking Focalin. He has been on it for about 4 weeks and I LOVE it. He is doing awesome on it. He was on Concerta but was having some different issues with that so we tried this out and I'm so glad we did. His appetite has increased (a lil' bit) and he doesn't have problems going to bed at night. He started on one 10mg in the am. Now he takes it 2x's a day. GREAT!! Hope you find the same.
My 6 year old son was just switched from Vyvanse to Focalin because he had developed some severe tics (on Vyvanse). I am hopeful that this new medicine will alleviate the tics while keeping his ADHD under control. I would recommend listening to your son's doctor and follow their lead. We have to trust that they know what they're talking about, right?
The best thing I have found is to keep a daily diary of behaviors and responses to the meds; talk to friends, other parents, school teachers, and let them know so they can help you monitor him. I found that most of the side effects occured during the day, while my son was in school. And, don't be afraid to tell your doctor if you don't like the Rx and ask for an alternative.
My child was also prescribed Focalin after I investigated it vs Ritalin especially as a better choice. She was not Hyperactive though. Her Grades improved, as did her getting home work done usually. Her reading improved to average in a well ranked school system. Meaning if she keeps this up in Middle School could be reading 2-3 yrs ahead of national avg. The top kids could read even higher yrs ahead! She has gotten IEP that is very important too. My spouse was nuts about giving our young child medications. So She did not start it till the end of Second Grade. To lower the dose and potential side effects as the Dr. wanted her to get to the highest possible dose for child we worked with for Brain Training that is used with kids with Dyslexia, ADHD, OCD...
That helped to lower the dose which is good but as work gets more complex and more multitasking the dose should be raised as the brain has to handle more things at the same time or quicker too. Over all we are pleased with the results over these past 3+ years. And her Dad is trying it finally now too to deal with her when she gets home as it does wear off even with taking it in the afternoon with school nurse support. BTW her other possible issue is Aspergers. That was not understood till she was in 4th or 5th Grade. But it helped increase school support with IEP and later for Middle School. We have hope for her now. And hopefully succeed much better than her Dad has in life. He is starting his own business in the view that being independent and strong opinioned it is better he be the boss than take others orders. Which was also true for his first full time job as a Professional in heath care. PS I think if Great your Pediatrician even recommended it as ours is tops in the metro area and he referred it to a child psychiatrist to do the rx and monitoring.
I had my 6 yr old son on focalin xr for 3 years. As his body tried to change( as the meds wont really allow) he became immune to the focalin and the doctor put him on vyvanse. That was killing him too. The side effects are tremendous for these meds. No more meds since Saturday. Its ben 3 days and my son is better already. He is now taking omega 3 fish oil and going to be taking grapeseed extract along with that. Please take your child off the chemicals. They are hurting him more than you know. Email me at email@example.com. I also could use a friend in this. My son is sleeping eating more than he ever has.
