My mother has been taking Aricept for a little over 4 years now, and they added Numenda a year ago. How long can she stay on Aricept? Forever? I recently read that it is only effective for 6 mo-1 year?? She is losing ground now month by month, so we don't know if ANY meds are helping.
It has been difficult to determine how long Alzheimer's patients gain benefits from using Aricept, because the disease itself progresses at different rates with different people. Another medicine, Namenda (memantine HCI), can be added when Aricept seems to not be working as well, but not all persons tolerate it well, nor does it help everyone.
Conclusions could be drawn that Aricept should be continued for the life span of the patient, since as soon as it is stopped the brain cells deteriorate, allowing the disease to progress.
I hope this helps your mother and you.
All the best and take care... both of you!
