by precription. I am terribly worried about the dosage and the long term affects this may have. From the information on the web I have found no other persons recieving this amount or even close to it. Can someone please provide me with information with how much is too much when it comes to MS Contin?
My mother has been prescribed MS Contin. She is recieving 740 tablets at 60 mg. every 2 weeks?

Also, her General Practitioner (family doctor) was the one who prescribed it. At this dosage should a pain management Doctor be monitoring it? She has been taking these pills for approx. 6 years.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my question. I will try to explain more here to clear up the confusion. My mom was in a very serious car crash 25 years ago and she suffered a crushed hip. The reason for this comming to my awarness about the pills is she is in the hospital in a diffrent city having her hip replaced for the 7th time. And the doctors questioned the amount and were stunned when she gave them the pill bottle with the precription on it. This is when I discovered how much she is taking. We live in Canada and do not have the DEA and I am not sure who or where I should report this too. I am very worried that her family doctor is trying to kill her with these pills because they do not get along. In Ontario, Canada once you have a family doctor you cannot change because of the doctor shortage. I don't know what to do. The hospital where she is having the surgery is not giving her these pills now because she is on IV drugs for pain with the surgery. But when she comes home I do not want her taking these pills especially at this dosage. She has medical coverage for the pills but it dose cost her a percentage of the total amount. So I question all the money it has cost her when it possibly could have been much less if she doesn't need this amount. I have always questioned why she has to go every 2 weeks to pick up her precription and she always told me beacuse of the amount she is given. Can anyone anser what I can do in Canada regarding having an investigation into the family doctor or if this is even possible.
Are you absolutely sure it's 740-60 mg.tabs every 2 wks!!! That just sounds impossible,I don't know a pharmacy that would be handing 1,480 tabs@month over to her?Call or visit the pharmacy, and call her Dr.He doesn't have to talk to you,as it is privileged info, but tell him you are simply worried sick about your mom!Hopefully one of the 'regulars' who answer questions on this site will help you as my knowledge is negligible.Good luck, and please let us know what happens?God bless... At the very least I am sure Canada has some type of Medical review Board? Make a complaint against the doctor with the police. Certainly the hospital (because they were so shocked) may be able to do something about this doctor and what he is doing. Or change her meds. You could also take the drugs from her. Ask a professional (while you're there in the hospital) the safest way to taper her down on these meds. Do whatever you need to do to get this doctor out of her life. There has to be some sort of quality controls in place in Canada. Wow, what a dilemma! If she has to stay with this doctor, never let her go alone! Go with her and YOU control the meds.
Wow!! I have a really bad back and have been on pain meds for 27months now. I started out on 1 loratab 7.5, then 2 then 3, then 10mg went up to a day. Then i went to 3 endocet 7.5, then 4 then 10mg aand now i am on 5 10mg endocet a day. Next month my doc (who is a pain management doc) is putting me on ocycotin. I am a little scared i am only 30 but in so much pain! Now to get back to your situation i dont know anyone who takes that much!! i have 1 friend who gets 90 oxycotin 80 mg a month!! thats only 3 a day and she been on them for 11 years!! they started he on 2 10mg a day.
How can anyone take 50 pills a day!! Thats so scarey!!! I also know one other person who gets 180 methadone a month but, never seen anything like that!! I would move out of Canada if I had to to save my mom!!! You can look up methadone or methadose and they can use that to help get her off the ms cotin!! You know i couldnt even see getting that many in 1 month much less her getting them every 2 weeks!! does she even take all of them?? Maybe they can give her a pain patch instead!! My first husband od and died of pain med and zanexs, it is very serious you get her help!!
this is an insane amount of pain killer, and like wise a very unethical doctor that wrote the prescription.this dosage is enough to kill several healthy people.is this common practice in social medicine?i sincerely hope not as there are many people in need of pain pills, but not enough to start there owne pharmacy. a very concerned ,daniel 36
