My husband has been on cymbalta for four mths to treat neuropthy pain in legs. Would like to wean him off the drug he is on 60mg x1 daily do i give 1 every second day for so long and gradually lower or see our LMO for lower does to wean... thankyou... Barbara
I would contact the prescribing doctor for a prescription of 30 mg Cymbalta and use it for at least 2 weeks, then go to everyother day for a couple weeks before stopping. Might still experience a little withdrawal but shouldn't be too bad if you taper as such.
See your doctor first and get a prescription for two 30 mg capsules. He may not need to go too slowly as he's only been on it for four months, but if he has mood swings, withdrawal symptoms, etc. you can try pouring some of the contents of a capsule out, thereby dropping the dose by 1/3rd of a capsule, or 1/2 of a capsule rather than the entire 30 mg at a time - that can be too much of a drop at one time. For me, I needed to drop by 1/4 capsule every two weeks, but I've been on it for a very long time. From what I hear most docs drop the dose fairly fast - say 30 mg every week or two, but a lot of people have troublesome symptoms with that fast of a drop. Let his body tell him how fast to drop the dose. Best wishes!
You missed to mention why you want him off Cymbalta? Hasn't it helped him with his pain?Or the side effects are burden? However, usually doctors start a paient with an alternative antidepressant that is less potent before weaning the older one off.So as soon as he starts taking the new med,as soon they reduce the doses of the earlier one,for they want him not to get bad withdrawal. You've got to consult a psychiatrist, and his help would be more accurate than your man's physician.his neurologist or orthopedist who prescribed Cymbalta should be informed too;yet,as I said psychiatrist knows about how to get a patient of SSRIs,SNRIs... etc Because the mentioned med your husband takes belongs,at first place,to psychoactive medicaments.Good luck..ace_rick
