... barrett's esophagus. How often does one see a doctor to watch this and how precancerous is it? Nervous wife
The hospital/doctor will let you know how often they would like to do a gastroscopy to monitor the condition. It's really hard to say whether it will become cancerous ... it is a probability but won't happen in everyone.
Please see link below. It has information about Barrett's Esophagus ... and also has links to other useful sites. Hope you find this useful.
Hi 50 something: I'm a 52 y o female and was diagnosed last year, with Barretts. My symptoms consisted of; hard to swallow, feeling of distention in the upper quadron of my stomach, abdomen also distended, hard to swallow at times along with, when I would burp, bile would come up into my throat! It also would feel as if my stomach was inflamed and someone was throwing salt on it, utterly horrible! This would happen mostly when I was under stress ie;anything upsetting would be enough to bother me.My Gastroenterologist had me undergo a "Colonoscopy". The results of that test had shown my small intestine being somewhat enlarged. She then had me undergo an "Endoscopy" which had shown the "Barretts". I have been and currently are, taking Metoclopramide-(Reglan), 4x day along with Protonix, 2x day. This medicine has helped me tremendously! Although I had read recently that one should not be taking the Reglan for a prolonged period of time! It seems to calm my stomach. Since it has been a year, I received a letter from my Dr., stating that I am due to have both of those tests done again! I was under the impression that one gets a Colonoscopy approx. every 5 years? Evidently, whether one has Barretts or another stomach ailment, I suppose it is imperative that it is done on a yearly basis, especially should it be pre-cancerous. Speaking of which, I was told that the rate for that is about 5%. I went online for further info pertaining to Barretts and it appears that its basically all according. My Dr. did convey to me-(last year), to somehow-(yeah, right!), alleviate stress as best I can?! So, this is what I can convey to you from my own personal experience. Best of luck to you and your husband. I hope you found this somewhat helpful. Good Luck ~
