... anyone give us advise how to help him as he has not been able to pass for the last 5 weeks
Your father needs to see the doc asap! He's gone much too long without a bowel movement. He may need to have an enema or other means to help him. Once he's able to have a bowel movement, he should drink lots and lots of water daily. Is he mobile? Does he walk much? If he's able to exercise a bit, this will also help keep him from being constipated. Lots of green vegetables and be careful with strong laxatives. They can become addicting to people on long term opiate therapy. Please call his doctor and let him know what's going on. Constipation can lead to very serious conditions. If you can't reach the doctor, bring him to the er. This is a very serious matter. I wish you the very best. Please repost and let us know how your dad is doing.
Prunes and warmed up prune juice (not from concentrate, if possible) - it works pretty fast. Also, if still bad get some "magnesium citrate oral solution" at the drugstore - he will be eliminating waste like crazy - it really cleans you out. However, read the warnings to be sure he does not have an underlying contraindication.
But Christine is absolutely right - he needs to see his doctor. (Hi Chris!)
