My father is 90 years old and is taking prednisone. He has rheumatoid Arthritis (developed at age 88). Is there anything he can do for the terriable side affects - dizzy, puffy face, but worse is the itching. He can't get below 15 or 17 mg of prednisone. Is there anything else he could take and how can he get off this stuff without all the itching?
I'd like to know why he is not on a biologic? I'm taking Humira for mine along with methotrexate and sulfasalazine. It works great. I was on prednisone but it only put 50lbs on me and didn't help.
I would ask your father's doc why isn't he on a DMARD and biologic. He is using an out-dated method.
Prednisone is a nasty drug. How long has your father been on it? If he has been on it a while he may never get off it because after you take Prednisone for a while the adrenal glands stop producing its naturally occuring adrenocortical steroids and therefore you are never able to get completely off the drug. It is not meant to be a long term drug. It is for short term suppression of symptoms just to tide a person over an exacerbation or acute episode. This Dr has done your father a grave disservice if he has kept him on this drug long term. The only way to get off is by reducing the dose slowly. If he has been on the prednisone a long time he may have difficulty ever getting off it. Have they tried treating the itching with medications while trying to wean him off prednisone? They could try some antihistamines but they do have drowsiness side effects.
Whether he can or cannot take another med for the rheumatoid Arthritis won't help, because if he's taken Prednisone for so long, he probably can't stop now. I understand, I'm searching for the same answer for my father-in-law. I thought instead of trying to treat the skin, maybe there are meds that can work neurologically or something, to block between the itch and the brain...
