release plus 30mg immediate release for interstitial cystitis & chronic back pain. I've developed a tolerence to the oxcontin. Abuse is not an issue. Methadone scares me. I've never tried any other pain meds & it seems odd to me that methadone is the only option he offers me. I'm also worried about what happens when I develop a tolerence to the methadone? As a chronic pain patient how would I switch back to oxycontin or anything else? I'd really appreciate some advice about all this, thanks in advance.
Properly taken, methadone is the longest acting rx pain med there is. He probably could have given you a fentanyl patch and some break thru meds, but he may have had a good reason not to. Properly tken, methadone is safe. That means go to all your dr appts and don't take meds without clearing it with him. Don't drink alcohol while you are on it. And if you ae rx'ed benzo tranquilizers or other sedating meds, muscle relaxers or anti insomnia meds, you must clear it with him. The drawback to taking it, is it is very strong and can cause slowed breathing or death if you mix it with benzos or other sedating meds. Most drs will NOT let you take anything like tht for that reason if you are on methadone. The other disadvantage is that it would be very hard to switch back to short acting opiates after being on methadone, your tolerance will have likely gone up.
Of you are concerned, talk to him about your concerns. It is an effective long acting pain med and is inexpensive compared to some other meds. Patti
I just have to respond to your question. I was put on methadone in 2000 becase they thought at the time that vicodin was causing me a liver problem. Well 7 years later , & at 120mg of methadone they found out they were wrong & it was a common bile duct problem. I had to beg to get off the methadone, but finally did and am back on regular 4 to 6 hour pain meds so I can function on a daily basis. Methadone is great for the pin, but hope you have a driver, because you will be falling alseep driving I guarantee you, & once you start, there is no turning back. A lot of doctors are being scared by the new FDA rules about the regular drugs & are turning to methadone & other type of drugs that can be used for pain. My personal experience & also my husbands is stay way away from methadone. I may get a lot of flack for sying it because you are at a high dose of the other med right now.
You can also guild a tolerance to the methadone & they just keep increasing it . My husband was on 180mg a month! What a zombie he became. It's like you may still hurt, but you just don't care because nothing matters anymore in your life, Just a warning to do a lot of research before doing this...
As you are saying is that u have grown ammune to your Oxys so they are switching you to Methadone. Yes, you hear horror stories about methadone because these are Methadone for Addiction. Yours will be dispense by your own physician. Like with any Opiate drugs, yes there is horrible side affect when trying to get off, but the point is you are way beyond getting off. You want to live a productive life and feel better and Methadone is the best way to go. The reason also of the horror stories is that these Addiction Methadone Clinics are totally different in the way these clinics treats their patients. Most do not care. I have seen people go in there stoned on Bars ( xanax 10mg), yet they still get dosed and several times there were deaths right at the clinic. These are Addicts. You are not. You do not abuse them as I can sence by your letter. As the other person said.. like any Controlled Substance, like Oxys and Methadone, its all the same.
Just be careful when taking any other Sadative type drugs, or any drugs for that matter. You seem level headed and In your case I would say go for it. If it was just a person with temporary pain that would be cured, then I would say NO. I envy those who can take Pain Killers without being addicted to the Euphoria. I guess talking to many people ( some addicts , other not ) that its in their personality and genetic. Some gets quickly addicted to the mildest form of painkiller because something about our recepters just do not have enough dopamine... It sucks, and its like our fault that we are Addicts. I have been on Methadone for 12 years on 120mg. Its no picnic after a while. Addicts getting on methadone gets mild high for up to 2 to 5 years, then slowly subsides. Just like you, our body just gets so used to it, but with me I do not care. I just do not want to use anymore and as long as it keeps me away from illicet drugs, that is my only salution for now. I really think some day there will be a better way to help Addicts stop using without having to go to MMT (Methadone Maintanance Clinics) everyday at the beggining and some clinics you have to wait almost 5 years till you get 7... 7 freaking take home. When there are other states that gives you a month or more by then. Just remember that your situation is different and you want to live for today, not worry about tomorrow. Lots of Luck, Morfeen62
