Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used commonly to treat protozoal infections and anaerobic bacterial infections. It also has anti-inflammatory effects in the bowel.
All medicines have side effects but not every animal will experience them.
Common side effects of metronidazole are due to the bad taste and gastric upset (best to give with food) and include symptoms such as excessive salivation, gagging, regurgitation, pawing at the mouth, nausea, vomiting and decreased appetite.
It should not be used in pregnant dogs and puppies, and should be used with caution in animals with kidney or liver problems.
