13 year old girl, average grades. No real behavioral problems except with her not wanting to do chores or homework.
My son has ADHD and his symptoms were quite noticeable from the time he was three. Was she diagnosed by a general physician or pediatrician or was the diagnosis from a psychiatrist? Not wanting to do chores or homework sounds like normal 13 y/o behaviors to me. My son was very aggressive and impulsive. It was a severe drain on the whole family as we couldnt take him anywhere. He couldnt behave in preschool or grade school. He couldnt pay attention or wait turns. Was constantly having to be nagged on to follow through with anything-even as simple as taking a bath (get in the bath tub, turn on the water-use soap, rinse your body and get out dry off with a towel and hang it up when you are done, comb your hair, brush your teeth, use toothpaste LOL! I'm not kidding it was awful!) I dreaded picking him up from school and preschool because I always got a LONG list of transgressions through the day.
He hit kids for no apparent reason (he always had a reason but it wasnothing anyone else could see or make sense of) He is very smart so his grades never were really bad.He was like a fully wound spring and would just go and go-like an energizer bunny!. If he was still for more than 5 min he fell asleep. My other son had ADD which was more of a focus problem. He misbehaved a lot too but not to the degree my other son had because he did not have the hyperactivity. He had trouble focusing and staying on track. He daydreamed a lot in school and had trouble following through on tasks. His organizational skills were terrible. His grades were C's D's and F's and he's very smart too! He spoke full adult sentences like an adult before he was two so I knew he could do better than the grades he was bringing in. the medicine did help his grades. My ADD son is now off all meds starting his freshman year in school-he still struggled but he graduated with a C average. My ADHD son is still on meds only while in school. He only takes them during the week and goes off on weekends and through the summer. I gave him a choice of trying school this year without but it is his choice to continue. He knows he cant focus without. He has really outgrown the worst of the symptoms. I used to could hardly stand it if he didnt take his meds and now he does fine without except his appetite is tenfold. Both boys were really affected in their appetites. Some children do either outgrow or learn to compensate without meds but some never outgrow it and need meds throughout their whole life. I just wonder if your daughter is REALLY ADHD. Her symptoms dont sound like it to me. That is why I ask who diagnosed. You say her behavior is not an issue. Did you ask about the diagnosis of ADHD because she wont do homework and chores? That sounds like pretty normal 13 y/o behavior to me. If it was her pediatrician who diagnosed ask for a referral to a psychiatrist for confirmation of the diagnosis.
My daughter was also diagnosed as having ADD, Her pediatrician told me she would have to take her med the rest of her life. Well mom, the chore thing is just part of being a teen, i wish they had a cure for teens and not wanting to do chores. have a great day I hope this helps. i was also told by a friend that they sometimes grow out of Attention Deficiet. I'm not sure about that so I'm going to ask her pediatrician.
