I really hope that he's doing it with a doctor's help. Regardless, if it's possible, switching over to something like Valium would be ideal, or at least Klonopin, as these are easier (relatively speaking) vs. Xanax, a drug that has such a short half life, and is not very forgiving. Other than that, there's a chance that kava kava (don't combine with alcohol - controversy over liver damage) and valerian might be of some help, both are sold as herbal teas or supplements at any health food store. Both will be a little helpful when it comes to coming off of Xanax, and they're not addictive at all.
Another thought, although I almost hate to mention it altogether would be the possibility of ordering Soma or Fiorocet online. I have read online that they can be obtained relatively cheaply and overnight from certified US pharmacies. I found this info at (scroll down)
Best of luck, and I hope that the herbal route will help curb the withdrawal symtoms a bit, or that you can have access to Valium, although, remember that 0.5 xanax equals 10mg of Valium, and that the maximum dosage for Valium is 75mg, which is considered to be a very very high dosage. 0.5 xanax equals 0.5mg of Klonopin, although, different sites will vary that a bit (making xanax 0.5 to Klonopin at 0.25, but most seem to say that they are of equal strength). The other route that I mentioned in the previous paragraph is not ideal, but may be something to think about in a last resort situation, and I'm really not sure as to what the proper dosage would be, as it would be used to augment the Xanax. A general rule to always start low, and see how your doing, especially with those two, due to the CSN depression that could become amplified (and you'd obviously have to stay away from alcohol). Also, these drugs are also habit forming.
Really, you should be talking to a doctor, as they would know the most regarding the best routes and choices currently available to you.
I hope that things start to get better asap!!
Well, the reply before me was a very wise answer an pretty much explained every little thing.. i'm guessing though 'cause it was too long to read but i'm from the South Bay, in Los Angeles California. Xanax is huge here... many people look everywhere for someone who sells them. I personally think it's pathetic, kids are paying 5$ for a 2mg bar, and the effect from them aren't that wonderful. I paid 5 dollars for 90 2mg bars last month... For weeks straight I was popping bar after bar and my body was immune to them. My tolerance went sky high, I couldn't even use them for anxiety because they stopped working due to my high tolerance and it's very short term after your tolerance goes up. They are very addicting, yet there was no fun involved in being on them. They started making me depressed and when I ran out... I had to go to the phyciatric hospital because I couldn't detox alone at my house. Detoxing from Xanax is just as miserable and unbearable as detoxing from heroin. I would rather go through a 5 day binge of meth comedown then go through another xanax detox. It's horrible... there was no point in winging myself off them because they were going to give me 1mg every 6 hours, like it would do something or help... Basically, getting off of xanax is a hard thing to do, and it isn't a pleasant experience and you will be going through hell for days up to weeks and withdrawls with panic attacks and involuntarily spasms of the legs and arms and mouth muscels. I made sure to not get another script for xanax again an went back on my klonopin, which I took for years before and have to take it 3 times a day due to severe GAD, and not to mention I have ADHD, so having those two diagnoses together is difficult enough. It's 2 different mental diagnoses that are oppisites. I take a stimulant for my ADHD and I've had severe anxiety since childhood. GAD (general anxiety disorder) runs on my moms side of the family, my mother has a very severe case of OCD and paranoia and is prescribed xanax just like her sister and her aunt. ADHD comes from my fathers side, 3 of my fathers siblings are diagnosed ADHD, 6 of my cousins were diagnosed as childeren, my older sister was diagnosed a few years ago and now my 2 nephews were tested and both have it. I was tested 2 years ago, and indeed had it.
