Well I deal with anxiety as well and i'm glad that you really wanna help.
one thing i do and this helps out the most, is doing exercise like jogging, running, what i did was skateboard and by doing those activities you release the adrenaline that's causing your body to panic or have anxiety.
Another thing is to breath in from your nose and exhale from your mouth and eventually slow your breathing down.
I also play video games or try to stick with everyday activities that will keep me busy also by doing exercise your brain releases serotonin which will make you feel better so it can help with depression to.
I've never helped anyone else with anxiety so theirs not to much i can say besides go to the doctor lol. Everyone gets anxiety over different things, i can get mine going just by talking to my family, but i feel that it helps if you have someone to talk to when your dealing with these issues so just keep what your doing and be there for him :)
One more thing try to stay away from alcohol or other drugs they may work for a few hours but they end up making it worse, i found that out the hard way lol and i know its hard dealing with something like this but if he can conquer the anxiety I know he'll end up being able to conquer anything else in the world.
