Morphine - timed release - dosage question?

- oxycontin, pain, morphine
I have 3 slipped disks, L3, L4, and L5. One of them is also torn. A year ago I used to take Oxycontin, but the price got too high. So I am now on MS Contin, 60mg in the a.m. and 60mg in the p.m. (12 hours later).
This does not seem to be working as well for my pain. I have been on Opiates for Chronic Back Pain for 4 years, on the Morphine for about one year... I know dr.s prescribe so many doses, etc... but if you have my condition, what dosage do you take?
This seems like a low dose to me. I would think 100mgs twice a day would be a good guess. When are you going in for surgery... Dave
I have not gone to that strong of medicines yet. I don't because it is to easy to become
addicted to them. I have had four back surgeries. The strongest medicine I have
been on is Hydracodone 500. I am however seeing a pain management specialist
who is about to prescribe stronger medicine, but I will wait to see what it is before
I consent to taking it.
I can't believe your doctor. I have one of the best. My problem is controlling my addictive behavior. I take 60mgs of methadone daily. I am trying to get back to 40mg daily. I hope I can make it. Good Luck with you. I wish I could help... Kim
My c-1 c-2 were fractured and had to be fussed(twice) I take 100mg 2x daily and dilaudid 4x daily.
I wish I had an answer for your question, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I asked ( Begged) to be switched from oxycontin 40mg 3x a day, because the new formula wasn't helping with pain much and it seemed to be making me SICK. He gave me the right dose comparison I found, which is a little higher for Morphine Sulfate, or ms contin. 120oxy = 180 ms contin. But... my heart was acting funny, NEVER before did I have it missing beats about 4 0r 5 a minute, if not more. I'd get a funny feeling in my chest, and depression suddenly got worse. I decided to check my pulse at lunch when this was happening and sure enough, there was a pause in the pulse right after that funny feeling in my chest, and it happened all day, all night and into last night. I was getting nervous, but today it's much better. Unfortunately, I started PAXIL at the same time, so I don't know which one it is that's causing it.
I also don't feel so hot,(crappy actually) and wondered if the switch from Oxycontin to this new one could be the culprit. I wondered if you might have any insight since you've made the switch already. Did you have any trouble, or weird heart things, or red ears? LOL... I'm sorry to not answer your question but only ask one of you!!! thank you (my pain dr. did get 15 mg instant relief ms every 6 hours to go with 2 ms contin a day... I'm still trying to make it work)
Hello Anonymous, if it's not working and the MS Contin is still expensive, why don't you try Methadone, which is good for back pain relief and might be cheaper for you?
Have you thought about looking for MS on the internet for sale. MS is very good for pain relief and works brillaintly. I was on it for about five years before I changed to Oxycontine, then back to MST and now I've been on Fentanyl Patches 100mg/hr wear them for three days at a time for the past two years. Now they are changing me to methadone in hospital.
It seems to many people I've spoken to who have been in long term pain, you change your opiat every three years or so because your body gets used to it and then you can start a different type on a lower dose.
Hope this helps Mirandagate
