My mom is taking 40MG of Cortef and her doctor has recommended she take Fosanex or Boniva to slow the process of bone loss. My concern is the possible side effects of these two medications. I read that Progestrone may be used instead. Any opinions?
Sorry, didn't finish the post. I've also taken the Fosamax for 5 years. I still have significant bone loss w fractures. It has causes horrible pains for up to 24 hours after taking. I have stopped taking anything for bone loss, and physically feel better. Everyone is different, but this has been my experience
She ought to try the fosamax and see how it goes. Many people are fine and she won't know until she tries.
I am sure that she is taking at least 1200 mg calcium supplements per day? With food. ESP. Milk if she likes it. Get chewables as the tablets don't always dissolve for people.
Stay away from progesterone. Too many cancer risks associated with it. Although they back and forth with it being safe, unless she is having major hot flashes, stick with the fosamax. Boniva costs a lot more if you do not have drug coverage. And the treatment for once a year is too unknown. My rheumatologist says she worries about using it because if there is a reaction to it there is nothing to be done to get rid of it. Fosamax is weekly so she has a better chance to know how she is doing. And it is now generic.
Good luck to her.
