Hello all! I am new to this site! I have a question regarding the Mirena IUD. I had it in for 5 years and had it removed this past October. I bled until a week before Christmas. I had to have Meds to stop the bleeding because is was so heavy. Lots of clots as well. I had another one inserted Dec 27th. I had no bleeding for about a week then it started back but very light. It fell out on Feb 8th. and the bleeding stop 5 days later. I have have no period since. Its now been 5 weeks and 2 days. I have taken a PG test only to be neg. Should I expect a period soon???
Being that you bled so much, you may not have anything for a while. The menstrual cycle happens when the uterine lining builds up in anticipation of possible pregnancy up until the egg is released, when the egg is NOT fertilized, the uterus sheds that lining and the cycle starts over. There is a balance of hormones that controls this process. It is doubtful that there is any built up lining since you bled for so long. You hormones may be out of balance however. You should see your gynecologist to check your hormone balance. It could be that it is off due to Mirena being in, then falling out early, and now your body is out of balance. If you are sexually active, you do need to be using a back up barrier method, like condoms, until you can either get your Mirena replaced or you decide to go with a different method-without the Mirena being in place, you have no contraceptive protection, of course.
