I use sumatriptan for migraines and I'm on cymbalta as a preventative. My doctor took away the sumatriptan because she thinks I am taking it too often. I have migraines everyday and I DON'T take sumatriptan everyday. I asked for an alternative and advice on how to keep the migraines subsided but the office hasn't called me back in 2 days. I am in so much pain my mom wants to take me to the hospital but we can't afford it. I'm not sure what to do and how to proceed. Do I find another doctor who's willing to actually work with me and help with the pain or do I stick I out with this doctor and continue to be in pain without my rescue? I need advice and I need some guidance. Please help.
Hello Katy. Maybe you could suggest to your doctor to prescribe an alternative for the days when the pain is at its worse. You're already taking the preventive med daily but you're always gonna have those bad days also. Request a strong back up med for those really bad days.
The thing is responsible doctors don't want to over medicate their patients. At the same time we as patients should try to be functional and keep going while dealing with a certain level of pain. There're many other ways to deal with pain without meds. Use the power of meditation. Think the pain away. Some people think of light in a beautiful hue of blue or purple and believe in its healing power. Use ice ( no more than 10 mins) Put a heat-pack on your neck and do stretching movements right after including your shoulders. I hope you feel better soon.
It is surprising that instead of your doctor limiting how many of the Sumatriptan pills she would prescribe to limit you taking too much, she chose to take it away altogether. Are you aware that taking any pain reliever more than 3 days a week can lead to rebound migraines? If you have been taking pain pills of any kind to that degree, that would explain your extreme pain daily, which would mean that you have to wait it out until your system recovers. I do feel for you as migraines are horrible. I used to have to go to the ER when I would vomit from the pain for hours and get very dehydrated. Hopefully the doctor's office will call you. I would recommend that you to try to find another doctor. Good luck.
