I have had a migraine for nearly a month now, over Christmas I was in hospital for 6 days having treatment called DHE which seemed to work when I was given it but didn't last or change the cycle of the headache. Has this happened to anyone else and if anything helped get you out of the cycle. My doctor team have tried different medications without success yet and I had Acupuncture for the first time yesterday but this isn't a quick fix. Has anyone got any advice or help that I would benefit from or had a similar experience.
I never had a migraine for a month, but I have had several that lasted for 6 days. Nothing worked until my Doctor put me on Fioricet for mild migraines and Fioricet with Codeine for the severe ones. It was like a miracle. They worked within 30 to 40 minutes with no side effects at all. My Pharmacist told me it was the combination of ingredients in it that made it so effective. (Butalbital, Tylenol & Caffeine) for the mild headache and the same ingredients with Codeine added for the severe ones. My Insurance won't cover it anymore because it is very expensive, even the generic. My Doctor switched me to Tylenol with Codeine for the severe headaches, but it does not help much because it does not have the other 2 ingredients. I also have a heart condition, Spinal Stenosis and Restless leg syndrome and taking Fioricet never caused a problem with my other meds. Talk to your Doctor, maybe Fioricet will help you. I hope this has been of some help. Good luck!
P.S. If your Doctor does prescribe Fioricet for you, take it only as directed,
because it can be addictive, even the one without Codeine.
Yes, it has happened to me. When I moved from Florida to Kentucky within a week I was hit with a migraine for 40 days. I took the neuro doc at the time put me on steroids, it was horrible! We tried a Migraine abortive med called Frova, that finally worked but the side effects were pretty harsh. I now use Axert 12.5 mg, side effects are still there but a little better than Frova.
Right now I have just started Gabapentin 300mg at night as a "preventative" med. I normally have 15-17 migraines a month. I have been on this new med 1 week and I have had 3 days in a row now without the "monster", one I am more than willing to dump!! For Pain when the "monster" won't leave I use Stadol Nasal Spray 10mg. This puppy normally will work with one or two sprays in the nose. It does however, land you in bed for about 10-12 hours. Ice packs make a huge difference too in case you haven't used them yet.
I think migraine is an inflammatory issue in the brain, for whatever reason neuro transmitters send out "wrong" signals to the brain. It's like an electrical or firestorm in my head, not sure about yours. Point is, the pain is excrutiating and the ice packs some how "cool" things down.
I am so sorry you are suffering with this, I hope that your doctor finds the right treatment for you. If I can say anything, it would be try every "preventative" med until you find one that works and you can tolerate. Also, try to "abort" the migraine as soon as you sense it coming. Continued migraine assault on the brain can lead to stroke, coma and brain cell death. I am praying for you to get free of this!!
