There is some debate about how long after taking birth control pills, that they protect the full 99.9%. Some say after just a week, others say after the first 21 active pills. To be sure, I would go with after the first 21 active pills. You are safe on them after that as long as a) you took them all and took them at around the same time everyday b) you didn't take any medicine that would make them less effective, such as anti biotics, please check with the pharmacist for a list of medications that might make them less effective. You are also safe during the period you are taking the inactive pills and are cycling.
