... out before my period so i know what to do. my doctor perscribed me microgestin 1/20, according to the instructions that came with them it says to start taking it within the first 24 hours of starting your period, then says to take in on the sunday of your period, so im kind of confused when do i start taking it within that 24 hours or on sunday? and also why is there only 3 weeks worth of pills? if im supposed to start taking them when im on my period am i going to go a week without taking them and no period or will i have to until my body sorts out a better time frame?
dear Samb, our resident guru on birth control pills is a lady named Dzoobaby and she may or may not be on this weekend. You should start taking these pills on the first SUNDAY of your period, even if it starts on a Sunday. It sounds like they gave you the rx form of this that does not have the inactive reminder pills. Please set a reminder on your phone to take them at a certain time everyday. Yes, you will skip a week after the first 21 active pills. You may have break thru bleeding during the first 3 months of use. You start them always during your cycle, because of the hormone levels during your cycle. AFTER your first 21 active pills taken correctly ( daily at 24 hour intervals with NO missed active pills) you will be safe from getting pregnant, even during the phase of inactive pills but it is critical not to miss the start of the new pack. You should have a lighter cycle after your first 3 packs and may even skip a cycle or start on the last day of the inactive phase, this is pretty common. It takes about 3 months of taking them to level out completely. Many ladies do have some of the symptoms of first trimester pregnancy symptoms during those 3 months, but are NOT pregnant. Until you have completely the first 21 active pills correctly taken, use a back up method to keep you from getting pregnant. It may say only one week of active pills is necessary before you can skip using a back up method, but trust me, you need to take all 21 pills correctly first, before stopping the use of a back up method if you are relying on it for complete protection against pregnancy.
